Beginning ASL: The Basics

Beginning ASL: The Basics is an introductory class designed for families, professionals, and anyone who is new to American Sign Language or looking to build a stronger foundation. This class provides a welcoming, supportive environment where participants can begin learning ASL with confidence—no prior experience required.

Participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of ASL, including visual communication norms, everyday vocabulary, and basic sentence structure. Emphasis is placed on practical, real-life use of ASL, helping learners feel comfortable incorporating signs into daily routines, interactions, and family life.

This class focuses on communication rather than perfection. Learners are encouraged to practice, ask questions, and grow at their own pace while gaining an understanding of how ASL works as a complete, visual language.

In this class, participants will:

  • Learn foundational ASL vocabulary used in everyday situations

  • Explore basic ASL sentence structure and visual communication strategies

  • Practice fingerspelling at an introductory level

  • Gain tips for using ASL consistently at home and in daily interactions

  • Build confidence to continue learning and using ASL beyond the class

Beginning ASL: The Basics is ideal for families with deaf or hard of hearing children, professionals working with young children, and anyone interested in starting their ASL journey. This class supports small steps toward building meaningful language, connection, and access through American Sign Language.
